The secret diary of Katie Hawcroft- Entry 9

Dearest friend,

I suppose Erica and her family will have arrived in Spain by now. I looked up at the sky at the birds coming pasting our house, which seem to be mostly enormous fat pigeons (where do they get so much food?) and wonder what it would be like up there. I wonder too if the air tastes sweeter, does it taste of freedom?

Still tonight (Thursday) is my first night at the shop, or rather it will be after School. I’m beyond excited, I don’t even care if I see Talisha today. Nothing and no-one will break this happiness. I’m nervous as well, of course. There’s a lot riding on my being able to do this job. More than feeding Mum a few extra bottles of Vodka, for sure.

Plus, this is the year I take my exams and I suppose you could say there’s a whole cowboy ranch riding on the results. I already know that the chances of those being good is slim, and when Minnie squints at me with that sliver of her eye, she seems to know it too. So, I guess I need to get good at something not academic and quick. Shop-keeping is a solid profession as it goes, and transferable from one place to another. A bonus!

Well my friend, as ever, I will let you know how it goes.
