How I went from Scientist to Author

Before I tell you about the end, I guess I should tell you about the beginning. After all that’s how stories are supposed to go, right? Don’t worry I won’t bore you with my life story but I thought you might like to get to know me a little better. It started for me when I was making those life choices at school and I simply had no idea what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I was one of those kids who hated the question, so what do you want to be? I enjoyed most subjects and science and English were firm favourites but still I didn’t know what career to choose. One that would be for life just seemed too hard to choose.

One fateful day after school a car and I had an argument and unfortunately the car won. Luckily I was not badly hurt, just my leg was busted for a while. What followed was lots of physiotherapy and treatments that were some kind of torture. Still it gave me an idea what I wanted to be, I wanted to help people and decided physiotherapy would be a good choice.

So I choose to do a science and health related subject at school, figuring this would give me a good grounding. It was only then I began to realise how competitive and underpaid physiotherapists were. One of my hobbies/passions at the time was horses, how would I be able to afford to keep up the hobby on the kind of wages they made? One thing I did know was that life was about more than work, hobbies were important to me. Music and Horses were a large part of my life. So I floated around and kept on with my studies, all the while getting older and no wiser. Then, thanks to a relative, an opportunity arose for an apprenticeship with a local research company. It seemed a good way to keep on studying and earning and with nothing better to do I took it.

I got lucky and got a permanent full time position and meet my future husband and ended up staying almost 20 years, so I guess not a bad choice. In a way it was the perfect career for me, I got to regularly change the type of role I was doing, to help people and to practise writing skills. Still all the while I felt there was something else out there, or rather a part of me inside that was not fulfilled. At the time I thought it was maybe that I wasn’t progressing fast enough, or I wasn’t as smart as my other colleagues. (they were awesome!) I suppose had fate not intervened I would still most likely have been there. However, life continues and moves regardless of our own personal feelings and it was not to be. The site I worked at was closing and I soon found myself out of the institution.

So here I was a lot, lot older and still trying to answer the question, so what do you want to be when you grow up?

Of course it’s not quite as simple as that, I had a husband and family who were also going through difficulties and changes and this, of course influenced my choices. I was trying to find a part time role that would suit my work/life balance needs. Just between us I was very deflated, I felt rejected, useless and unable to fulfil my own needs.

Thankfully that is when Poetry entered my life. It swept in on a breeze and gave me an outlet. It also gave me the thing I had been looking for, that creative passion inside me came bubbling out. Now it’s not a situation where a magic wand is waved and everything is perfect but now I knew what I wanted to do next. This is how my first children’s poem book, Unicorns are real and other cool poems was born. It’s still a very popular choice with my readers and my own personal favourite!

SO here I am, striking out in a sea of other indie authors, hoping to make my mark. AT least I’ve answered that question, what do you want to do when you grow up? I want to be a writer but I am not so sure about the growing up part…

Hope you’ve enjoyed my blog, if you have any comments, let me know, I’d love to hear from you. My romance novel “Inner Voice” is free as an ebook on Amazon over the next couple of days. Why not download it and give me your thoughts? Also I’m always here to help in any way I can.
